We've Done What for How Long Now?

So, on Tuesday, the 15th, Kam and I celebrated our monthiversary. (I know. Dorky. I love it.) Which got me thinking. We've been married for how long now? 34 days now? (If I counted that wrong, it's because I can never figure out if you count the wedding day, or today, or whatever. Not because I can't remember.) That's freaking crazy! I remember when it was 49 days until we get married, and I thought to myself "That's less days than there are states in America!"

What this has taught me is that time goes by way faster than you think it does, and I should never ever be impatient for anything ever again ever. Right?

Side note--I'm getting a new laptop on Monday, and I can't wait!

Obviously not going to work.

But it is amazing to realize how time just keeps moving, no matter what you're doing. It's kind of an inspiration to really make things happen, because you don't want to waste time, and at the same time, it inspires you to enjoy all the little things you're doing right now.

Because you never know when it's going to change. I mean, I never knew the guy I asked out to the movies with me was going to turn out to be a hot comic book reading stud who would eventually ask me to marry him. Case. In. Point.

And then on top of all that, it makes me think of where we're going to be 2, 5, 10 years from now. And how that's going to fly by so soon, we're practically doing it right now! And that's a pretty optimistic thought, because things right now are pretty awesome!

So basically, all of this crazy introspective babbling comes down to two points.

Kam and I are super happy and awesome.
Kam and I get to keep being super happy and awesome. Forever.

(I know you're not always happy, and things aren't always good. But if time keeps moving all the time, those things are eventually over, too. (I'm sure that's what Kam tells himself whenever I'm having a mini panic attack. He is much more patient than I am.) And you eventually always come back to being super happy and awesome. If you want to be.)

Sweet.

So, to those of you who missed this on Facebook, here are a couple pictures of what our monthiversary consisted of:

So, this is what I did for Kam. (He had been hinting at those movies for a while (Yes, I called them those movies.).)

And then Kam made me dinner! And I should have taken a picture of that delicious pizza soup, but I didn't. I just ate it instead. Because that's what you're actually supposed to do with food.

I still have more to say, but that is a sufficiently long blog post for now. But look for the pizza soup recipe in the future! I know some of you have been asking!

P.S.!!!

Kam and I got a calling in our new ward! We were called as...

Nursery leaders!

(For those of you who aren't in on the Mormon lingo, that means we take care of (and teach to whatever degree that's possible) the 18 month - 3 year olds during Sunday School so their parents can listen to lessons/perform other church duties.)

Those of you that know us well probably know how we feel about that.

We have three really cute kids. They're all pretty young (barely talking), so it's hard to have much of a formal lesson, but they sure are fun to play with! We teach with another couple, so that we can trade off each week, but today we just all worked together, and we're thinking we might keep doing that. It's nice to be able to out number the kids.

My favorite part was holding one of the boys until he stopped crying. After a while of that, he cheered up and started playing, but he wanted me to go with him everywhere.

A close second was seeing another little boy contently play with toys by himself and hearing Kam call him over from across the room because Kam was getting bored and wanted to play!

I have a feeling we're going to get some good stories out of this calling.

To top it off, this was in the scriptures Kam and I read last night: The Lord commands us to become "... as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father." (Mosiah 3:19) I'll admit many of the traits that first come to mind when describing small children are not exactly those I would like to emulate. But thinking back on those kids, I'm a little surprised at how applicable that scripture is. I'm sure I have a lot to learn from them.

The Chronicles of Matridom Part 2

The Chronicles of Matridom
Part 2 - Moving In

Note: I've been wanting to blog multiple times this week, but I kept thinking, but I need to follow up on my Chronicles of Matridom! And I don't have time for a post like that... So you may see an intermission coming up shortly. Also, to anyone wondering when the wedding supplement of these chronicles is going to present itself, the last of the pictures will be ready sometime around the end of this month.

A lot of you have been asking about pictures of our new apartment. To all of you, "This is your day!" (Read that in the voice of a Shakespearean announcer, or something cool like that.)

Kam had to drive across Wyoming in a 16' moving truck so we could bring some furniture and presents back with us from my parents' house in Colorado. Unfortunately, I didn't have a driver's license (that story is pretty complicated), so I couldn't be any help! Kam told someone recently (and I was there to hear about it) about how bad the roads were when the sun was setting, and he said, "I didn't want to wake Chloe up because I knew it'd freak her out. It was like we were driving on clouds!" (I'm sure he didn't mean that in a good way.) That's right. My sweet husband drove through windy, snowy Wyoming, and what did I do? I fell asleep. During the parts I was awake, though, (which was most of it, I think... hope...) I did get a couple good quotes.

Me: "At least we're not pioneers. This is way better than being pioneers."

I started screaming in a parking lot in Wyoming because it was so cold just to walk back out to the truck.
Kam: "Never mind my wife. She's just crazy."
Me: "Waaaahhh!!! If you scream it gets warmer!"

After that long adventure, (A huge thanks to Laurie for housing us that night. I was seriously starting to get nervous about Kam's ability to stay awake at the wheel. I had a whole emergency what-I-would-do-if-Kam-fell-asleep routine planned out in my head.) we finally began moving in. Which took days and days and days (and is still taking days and days). Kam and I both kept thinking of the quote from The Incredibles, "Today, we are officially moved in! Ha ha ha ha!" I look forward to celebrating that day. (Another huge thanks to Gordon and Peter and all the friends he rounded up to help us carry our furniture into the apartment. I didn't have to feel bad about not being able to lift anything. :) "I can't. I can't lift anything up at all.")

So, (drumroll please!) here are the pictures of our new apartment!

We just got our fancy new bedspread.

Kam looks so good reading his scriptures while I walk around taking pictures.

Got to love cinder block walls. (The tv is a lot more interesting to look at, though!)

Notice the gas stove. Whoohoo!

Not a pretty picture, but hopefully this gives you a little more perspective.

Ok, I know it's super weird that I took a picture of our bathroom. But look how cute it is!

We even have towels with our initials on them like we're fancy people! (And a sconce on the wall, which makes me feel really pampered, even though we can't light the candles. You can't see it in any of the pictures, but I wasn't going to put three pictures of my bathroom online. That would just be silly.)

So, there it is! A peek into our humble abode. There's still work to be done. I never thought I liked decorating until I got married and all of the sudden I care about stuff! As of right now I would really like to creatively hang some curtains (we can't use nails/screws) and paint something big we can hang on that mostly bare wall in the living room. And Kam would really like to get a nice entertainment center. So stay posted.

And here are a few more fantastic tidbits after our first few days of moving in.

Something you have to understand about this story is that about a month into our relationship, I decided it would be cute if I blew in Kam's face. This turned into a sort of war that's gone on ever since. It's become so habitual, I sometimes have to catch myself just before I accidentally do it to one of my girl friends. (I think Brenna experienced that once.) So, our first day in our new ward, someone's cute little kid leans over the bench in front of us and is babbling/making faces/being cute. And then out of the corner of my eye, I see the little boy wrinkling his nose and Kam laughing.
Me: "You can't just blow on other people's kid's faces!"

After a long day, Kam and I were sitting together on the couch, and I guess I started to drift off, because the next thing I knew I was sitting up saying to Kam, "I had a dream I was a present, and you were shaking me to find out what was in me." True story. I don't really remember much more than that.

When I told Kam to cuddle with me, and he said he was because his arm was around me, I said, "That's more like a protection so I don't cuddle you to death. Since I'm so huge and powerful."

Kam: "Have you seen my wife? She's the one in the koala hat."

Kam and I whispering to each other at church this morning:
Kam, pointing at a baby blanket: "According to that blanket, only giraffes, elephants, and crocodiles were on the ark."
Me: "Maybe those are just the big animals you can see, and all the other ones are really little and you can't see them in the boat."
Kam: "I don't think so."
Me: "And then when they get off the ark later they grow up to be bigger."
Kam: "Like, 'Just add water?'"
Me: "Yeah, that'd work! There's plenty of it!"
Kam: "They open the doors to the ark and it's just like, pop, pop, pop!"
I'm pretty sure I was less reverent than every child in that room after Kam started making popping noises. Then anytime he did that for the rest of the meeting I had to cover my face and put my head down.

So, pretty much, we're the coolest couple ever. Today we watched Matilda. Yep.... That's all I have to say about that.

The Chronicles of Matridom Part 1

I just announced to Kam, "I think I need to blog something since so many people have been checking our blog and have been disappointed." Which he seemed skeptical about, so I insisted, "They need us, Kam! They neeeed us!"

(Maybe you don't really need us. Fine. We don't need you, either.)

So, I'm proud to announce, we're back from the dead! (Only barely, but enough that Kam gets to play X-box again, and I get to blog again, and we're both pretty happy with that.)

But to describe our unexpected journey (Ok, not so unexpected.) I think I'm going to have to fill you all in through a series of installments which I've decided to call The Chronicles of Matridom (Martidom... Get it? ... It's like matrimony plus martyrdom... Because we died... Just nod... You get it.).

The Chronicles of Matridom
Part 1 - Honeymoon  Highlights (Rated PG)

  • Me getting sick on Day 2 of the honeymoon and having to stay in bed all day and have my wonderful husband take care of me.
We went to this cool restaurant called the Crooked Duck. It was delicious, but I blame it for me getting sick.
Our sick pad (Oh. Ha ha. No pun intended.)
with a kitchen!
  • Watching the Hobbit - Me, raving about how long it was and they didn't even get to the end: "Maybe if they made a condensed version of the Hobbit, like a picture book..." Kam starts laughing. Me: "Well, are you going to kiss me or laugh at me?"
  • Being given a flower from a knight at Medieval Times. Apparently all the little girls had already gotten one (I hope) and Kam was practically flagging the knight down.
At Medieval Times.
This isn't a knight, but he's pretty cool looking, and it's the best picture we got of the performance.
  • Riding Segways around the pier in Long Beach - Me: "This is right up my alley. You get to look at stuff, and you don't have to sit still."
Just a little bit of the beautiful view at the pier. We got to see a bunch of wild cats just sitting on the rocks like they owned the place!
We were really good at riding these.
See?
  • Seeing some beautiful ice sculptures in a 12 degree dome.
It was really cold!
Kam really wanted to get back to the rest of warm California.
But I couldn't leave until I got a picture with this penguin. I swear, it's really a penguin.
  • Going to Bubba Gump and eating some amazing shrimp (and listening to Kam's Forrest Gump references that I didn't get...)

  • Explaining to Kam that I calculated how much gas we would need - Kam: "I love it when you comfort me with logic."
  • Disneyland!
    • A really nice guy helped us find the newly wed couple mouse ears, and asked us if we wanted them embroidered with our names or anything. When we asked how much it would cost he said, "Uh... We could do it for free for you guys," to which, of course we had to accept! So it took 20 minutes for them to be emroidered, and when Kam went to pick them up later, they didn't charge him for the ears, either! He meant the whole dealio would be free, not just the embroidering. So now we have a free set of super awesome mouse ears with our names and wedding date on each of them. And I can already hear our future children saying, "Mom, I want to go to Disneyland! You and Dad got to go!" Well played, Disneyland. Well played.

Our awesome mouse ears (Kam's other shirt tail is tucked under his hat and my veil is up so you can see the words)
    • While waiting in line for the teacups - Me: "I'm like a little girl in here." Kam: "Yeah, and I'm like a little boy." Me, mocking a boy's voice: "'This is girly and dumb.' A little boy like that?"

    • Kam: "Do you want to meet the princesses, Chloe?" I just stared blankly at him for a minute or something. He laughs, "You're like, 'Uh, yeah, I do.'"
I waited in line 45 minutes to see Rapunzel! But then Flynn seemed more excited about our wedding than she did! He was the one that insisted that Kam get in the picture.
    • Talking about cute kids on our bus - Me: "Yeah, I saw the lady next to her holding a baby and I thought, I want one of those. Actually, it just looks warm, and I'm cold."

On the Matterhorn
  • Driving down the coastline past all the ritzy beaches.
Our ride
    • Getting used to married life -
      • Kam: "Chloe, you made a mess in the shower. Only you could mess up a clean place." Me: "How do you know it was me that got conditioner on the wall?" Kam: "Because your hair whips around, and you're the messy one." Me: "Yeah, you're right..."
This actually happened at Disneyland. But it's pretty good evidence that I am the messy one.
      • Kam: "Why don't you just cook it like we normally do?" Me: "It says 'Thawing not necessary.'" Kam: "Alright. Good luck burning that chicken."
      • Kam: "I don't know how you did it, but you made mac and cheese difficult. Just say, 'I'm cute.'"
      • Kam whistling the Lord of the Rings theme song over and over in the bathroom.
      • Kam replacing the word "butt" with lyrics of songs on the radio.
      • What Kam says I'm thinking when I giggle: "Oh, fun! We're laughing! What are we laughing about?"
      • Kam: "Girl, you look good." Me (in sweats and a t-shirt) "Really? That doesn't sound very convincing." Kam: "Well, I wanted to say gorgeous and beautiful and lovely all at the same time, so I just said... good..."

    My Man

I am so incredibly blessed to be marrying such a wonderful man (in less than 2 days!) So many little things today have reminded me of how incredible he is. And oh, how I love to brag about him. So here is my very short (it's too late to write a long list tonight, although I'd love to) list of things I love about my Kam.

    1. He likes to be a gentleman and open the door for me in the car (even though our new car has keyless entry! Ah! New car!).
    2. He likes to make me laugh.
    3. He leads with the power of the Priesthood.
    4. He thinks I'm cute when I make weird noises.
    5. He's willing to make changes for me, like changing his habits on Sundays so we can spend more time together enjoying the Sabbath.
    6. He remembers little things about me, like that I'm afraid of post offices.
    7. He's very patient when he knows I need help, and even puts up with my pride.
    8. He happily respects my requests without complaining or questioning (like driving me to Walgreen's at 8 am in morning).
    9. He challenges me to become a better person with love, and without putting me down.
    10. He's proud to call me his wife (even though I'm technically not yet).
And for now, ten is a good enough small number, because I must go to bed.

I hope no one minds all my bragging. I mean, of course you really should be jealous. But maybe I shouldn't be rubbing it in so much... ;)

    Freakin' Out

Before I was getting married, my beautiful roommate, Chelsea, was getting married. And I remember seeing her really upset one day about 3 or 4 days before her wedding. And I thought, Oh, crap. What's wrong?! And I figured it had to be a big deal, because usually, she was so freaking happy!

    Nope. (Chuck Testa)

It was all fine and she married the wonderful Brett Hurst and they are currently in the process of living happily ever after.

But on that one day when Chelsea seemed pretty upset, I was really concerned. So I mentioned it to my friend, Lauren, while we were at work. And she kind of laughed at me and said girls always cry the week before they get married. For no reason. They're just freaking out, so they cry a lot.

    She was right.

I sure don't like feeling like a bridezilla, or an overly emotional package of hormones, but Lauren made it sound like a rite of passage into matrimony, so in that case...

I did it, you guys! I'm officially a freaked out bride. Whoohoo!!!

Man, wouldn't it be great if we always had an excuse to celebrate crying?
(I guess depending on how you look at it, we women might get that about 12 times each year.)

    Over and out.

    We Can Live!!!

So this may sound like a very boring blog post to you, but it's super exciting to me. Because that box you see coming up a little later on in this post is actually a picture of what it looks like to not be living in a box all winter!

That's right. We have an apartment. And although it is in Wymount, I'm pretty convinced it's perfect. Despite the cinder block walls.

Just a few of the many wonders of a Wymount apartment:
    • Cozy (read "small")
    • Affordable (read "ok that it's small")
    • Close to campus
    • Plenty of storage space
    • Beautifully kept grounds
    • Very clean
    • Becomes available on the very day we can move in!
    • Month to month contract
    • Nice balconies
    • Furniture rental
    • On the ground floor
    • Gas stoves
    • BYU employed maintenance (I've had relatively good experiences with them)
And... Yeah. That's pretty good. (For Kam's benefit: "It's actually a really good little house.")

One of the most curious benefits of this apartment is the storage room attached to the bedroom. I guess that's really all it was made for, because I don't know how else they would have justified that space.

I feel like it's a little creepy to post a full floor map on here.
Not sure why. You could always just look it up on the
Wymount website if you're really curious.

I mean, storage space is great. And probably necessary. But when there are already two and a half other closets in your one bedroom apartment, you tend to get a little more creative with the "storage space."

So, just picture us. Mapping out our little floor plan and imagining in our furniture. And we're having a pretty good time. It's an exciting thing to have a tiny little house! I mean, of course I wanted everything to look all nice and follow all those unwritten rules of decorating (...as far as I know, which is very little!), and Kam is being all practical about where outlets are, and how many feet across is the counter top, and getting in the way of all my imagination!

Which is probably pretty good. Since this apartment is real and not imaginary. But it feels pretty imaginary right now.

So yeah. Despite my tendencies to overimagine (I made that word up), we were having a good time.

But when it came to the storage space, we both got pretty imaginative! "Four feet by nine feet! That's huge!" Ok. We never said that. But we did toss around the idea of an office. Actually, this is kind of what the conversation sounded like.

Kam: Hmm, we could use that for something.
    Chloe: Yeah, like an office.
    Kam: Or a man cave.
Chloe: That's like the same thing.
    Kam: No, it's not.

I decided not to say anything after that. If those are not the same thing, I'm slightly concerned about what the difference is. Anyway, I think someone knocked on the door and distracted us then. Which is ok, because we agreed on where to put the TV and the couch, and that's a lot of work when you're playing house with real... imaginary... pieces.
